As the frost melts away and the earth awakens from its winter slumber, there’s an undeniable sense of anticipation in the air. For us in the River Market community, springtime isn’t just a change in weather; it’s a season of renewed hope, hard work, and boundless excitement. As owners, growers, grazers, makers and bakers we all get excited by the renewal spring brings. We are excited to tend to our gardens, get outside for activities, and reconnect in the community throughout the spring/summer. For many of the local farmers and producers River Market partners with springtime is that last step before the bustling summer!
In the months leading up to spring, many of our farmers meticulously plan and prepare for the upcoming growing season. They pore over seed catalogs, carefully select the best varieties for their soil and climate, and tend to their equipment, ensuring everything is in optimal condition for the busy months ahead. Yet, despite the thorough planning, there’s an element of uncertainty that comes with farming – a reliance on nature’s whims and the hope for favorable conditions. As a community we know there can be many challenges in being a farmer/producer. We have a responsibility as a co-op to help support them in this process. When we partner with local producers we support our local economy by giving local producers a great way to connect with people in our community. The St. Croix Valley and surrounding area has so many incredible producers. We are grateful to have these partners in our area.
For River Market we are so proud to play a role in these farmers/producers potential success during the upcoming growing season. Inside our bustling aisles there is more than just food on the shelves; there is a story of community empowerment and local agriculture. As a community owned store we prioritize the value of sustainability and supporting our local producers. We want to help play a role in connecting these local producers to our community and be a hub that we all can connect in through our River Market community. River Market wants to connect local farmers/producers and owners on a daily basis by stocking our shelves with their great products. We currently have over 128 local producers and nearly 7,000 owners.
As these spring days lengthen and give way to summer, the landscape transforms before our eyes. Barren fields/gardens burst forth with vibrant greens, and orchards explode into a riot of blossoms, filling the air with their sweet perfume. It’s a sight that never fails to inspire awe and gratitude, a reminder of nature’s incredible resilience and beauty. At our own homes we see our gardens come to life in the form of flowers and vegetables. It is a good reminder that springtime isn’t just about planting crops and flowers. Springtime represents an excitement and newness. It is the beginning of months of hard work and dedication to see a seed grow into something beautiful.
For our farmers/producers we partner with; springtime is an important part of their year’s success. As a Co-Op we are proud to champion local sourcing and production. It is our responsibility to help support our local food system. We hope all of our owners are as excited as we are to get out to a farmers market or find great local products at River Market this spring/summer.
So as springtime dawns once again, let us pause to celebrate the boundless joy and optimism that permeate this time of the year. It’s a time of new beginnings, of growth and renewal, and of the enduring bond between humanity and the land. And as we marvel at nature’s wonders unfolding before us, we are grateful that there are many great co-op’s like River market that bring communities together. Happy spring!
