Last month, River Market Owners made a historic choice. With 81% of Owners voting in favor, River Market Community Co-op will consolidate with Mississippi Market Co-op in January. This was not a small decision; it was a deliberate act of care for the future of our Co-op and for the cooperative movement as a whole.

Independent grocery has always been an act of defiance against the idea that scale and profit are the only measures of success. Yet across the country, small grocers and co-ops face enormous pressures. Margins have grown thin. Supply chains are volatile. National chains are getting bigger and leaner, outpacing local stores through sheer buying power and logistics. Many community-based stores like ours stand at a crossroads: adapt, partner, or slowly fade.

Rather than waiting for the market to decide our fate, River Market’s Board chose to act from a place of strength. Over the past few years, we examined how to strengthen the Co-op’s future without losing what makes it special. The answer was to build on the same principle that helped create River Market fifty years ago: cooperation.

Joining with Mississippi Market allows both co-ops to expand what we can do together. We’ll have more tools to invest in our staff, support local farmers and makers, and weather the next decade of challenges with greater stability. But just as important, this move strengthens something that runs deeper than economics: the shared ownership and democratic participation that make co-ops unique.

Every Owner that casted a vote participated in a fundamental cooperative principle: shaping the direction of the organization they collectively own. Your participation gave this decision legitimacy and meaning and the strength of our Co-op has always come from that shared accountability and willingness to engage.

As we prepare for the launch of Rivers Cooperative Markets in January, we know that change takes time. It can bring both excitement and uncertainty. Our focus now is on a smooth transition that preserves what Owners value most about River Market: the people, the local relationships, and the sense of community that defines this place.

To everyone who voted, asked questions, took the time to understand the proposal, or even just shopped and supported the co-op, thank you. Your participation shaped this outcome and will continue to shape what comes next. Together, we’re building a stronger, more resilient Co-op that will continue to serve and adapt for many years to come.
